Pregnancy Information
How Mom and Dad learned the good news: pregnancy test taken Mar 5.

How Mom and Dad announced the good news: initially Mom and Dad wanted to wait a while, just to make things more exciting when they did announce my impending arrival. They thought it might be fun to wait until Mom was 'showing'. But, after about a week and a half, Mom could't wait anymore, and she had my sister, Sammi, send an email out to everyone announcing that she was going to be a big sister.

Ultrasounds: One at 11 weeks, 22 weeks and 26 weeks. Mom and Dad suspected I was a Girl after the 22 week ultrasound, but they were fairly certain after the 26 week one.

Prenantal Care: Mom's midwife, Barbara Poole, took care of me throughout my months in Mom's belly. She was also the person who barely caught me. You can read more about my delivery here.

Mom's Health: Mom felt really good through the first two trimesters. She was able to go to the Y several times a week and exercise fairly vigorously. But at some point in the 6th month, I decided to sit on Mom's sciatic nerve, and from then on, I had my Mom pretty miserable, not able to do much of anything. But hey, don't look at me. I learned this from my sister. I hear she did this to my Mom too.

My First Few Days
Hospital: Grant Medical Center in Columbus, OH.

Length of hospital stay: exactly 24 hours, about 21 hours too long. :)

What we thought of the hospital: Mom's nurses were very, very nice. She thought all of them were wonderful. She didn't spend much time over in the labor and delivery area, so she didn't get to experience them much, but the post partum care nurses were wonderful.

Going home: Grandma and Grandpa Kappes spent a couple of days with us. They cooked for us and cleaned. They took good care of my sister, Sammi too. They really tried to pamper Mommy.

What kind of newborn I was: Mom says I was a hungry one. I was fairly content most of the time too. I slept for short periods of times and would wake up hungry like most all newborns.

The First Few Weeks
My first smile: My Mom swears that I'd smile at her at about a week old. Daddy finally saw me doing it around 2 1/2 to 3 weeks, and I was smiling regularly for just anyone at about 5 weeks.

Holding my Head Up: There isn't any particular time when I started holding it up. But I just gradually got better and better at it. By 6 weeks, I could hold it up for very long periods of time, when I was upright. As for when I'm laying on my belly, I'm 2 months old, and can barely push my head up from that position, but Mom doesn't let me get much practice in that position.

Sleeping: Mom was miserable the first few weeks with me. I am a noisy little thing. I constantly groan, grunt, coo, cry, etc in my sleep. When I was in Mom's room, Mom pretty much couldn't sleep at all. Every little sound from me, and she'd wake up, not able to sleep until she knew I was back asleep. Many times, she'd just go ahead and feed me, so that she could be sure I wasn't going to wake up hungry, and she could go back to sleep sooner. She was miserable. Finally, she figured out that if she moved me out of her room (about 4 1/2 weeks old), that I could make all the noises I wanted, but I wouldn't wake Mom up, unless I was actually crying. It worked like a charm. The other trick was that I would startle myself awake when I was sleeping on my back. So until I was 8 weeks old, I slept in my carseat. I would sleep for 6 or 7 hour periods without eating. Mom has felt so much better. But last week, Mom moved me into my crib. I don't sleep as good in my crib, but I'm getting there. I now wake up about 4 hours after I eat. But, Mom thinks I'll start sleeping longer in my crib as I get used to it.

The first Few Months
First rolled over: I rolled over the first time the exact day I turned 4 months old. But I didn't like it. I would roll back to belly, but get my arms caught under me, and get MAD!! By 4 1/2 months old, I've gotten better at extricating myself.

Thumb sucking: I am quite a thumb sucker. I'll go through periods where I'll suck other fingers and such for a few days, but then I go back to my gold ole' thumb. I don't grasp my fingers together into a fist, I pretty much have my other fingers just spread over my cheek. Oh yeah, it's ALWAY my left thumb. I usually use my right hand, to rub my face or my head while I'm sucking my left thumb. By the way, the fact that I suck my left thumb causes me to roll towards my left side whenever I roll over. It'd be too hard to roll to the right, with my left thumb in my mouth.

Laughing: I was laughing pretty good at around 3 months. I have a great laugh, and I love when people talk to me. I laugh very easily.

Sitting up: As incredible as it sounds, I can sit up at 4 1/2 months old. I'm able to do it longer and longer each day too. Mom's not surprised, because I've always been an upright baby. I've always hated laying back, unless I'm sleeping.

Eating: Mom started giving me cereal at 4 months old. My doctor said that since I'm breastfed, that at this age, I need to start getting iron in my diet somehow. And, it was either cereal or vitamins. Mom opted for the fortified cereal. I LOVE to eat.
