Hannah Geneva Kappes is Born
December 5, 2000
A story of fast cars and fast deliveries.

Througout Mom's pregnancy, she was sure that I'd be born around mid November. Basically, because my sister was almost a week early, she just assumed, I'd probably come even earlier. Plus, Mom was pretty miserable by that point, due to the sciatica that I was causing. Mom couldn't even bend over without having shooting pain. She couldn't wait for me to come out.

Well, on Nov. 22, the day before Thanksgiving, Mom went to the doctor. They did an exam and said that she was dilated 4 cm. Wow!! Mom was so excited, just certain that she'd deliver any moment. Thanksgiving Day came, still no baby. That was a long weekend, expecting any moment to start into labor. NOTHING!!!

Mom went back to the doctor on Wed, the 29th. This time, her midwife said she 5 cm, and fairly effaced. My goodness, she thought for sure I'd drop out of there. My water sack was bulging out too. Anytime now.

Time went by, nothing.

Well, finally on Tuesday, morning, Aunt Kourtney called Mommy at 11:03 am (thanks to caller ID, we were able to get the exact time). Mom noticed that she was feeling kind of crampy by that point. She mentioned that she was feeling crampy to Kourtney, and that she'd seen a little bit of blood that morning. Kourtney and Mom discussed, how hopefully, that meant the baby'd come out in the next day or so.

Well, as soon as Mom got off the phone with Kourtney, she noticed that the crampiness was getting strong. She messaged Daddy at work to let him know that he may want to finish up whatever he's doing, so he can plan to come home early that day, just in case. Well, a little bit later, Mom suddenly realized the cramps were coming and going, fairly rapidly. So, she called Daddy and said, "Come on home, now."

Daddy came home. He works over half an hour away from home. By the time he got home, Mom's crampiness had turned into intense pains that were lasting over two minutes, with just under a minute between them. Dad set himself into high gear. He got our stuff together, loaded Sammi up, and even grabbed a towel for Mommy to sit on, and we left just before 12:30.

We dropped Sammi off at a friend's house, and Daddy rushed to the hospital. Mom was yelling at him to slow down, because if we were in a car accident, Mom wouldn't be able to handle it. Daddy drove like crazy, paranoid that I'd be born in the car. Mom yelled at him the whole time. He ran red lights, went around stopped cars, etc.

We got to the hospital right at 1:00. Daddy let Mom off at the ER entrace, while he went to park in the parking garage. Mom was pacing downstairs, in obvious pain. Finally, a nurse in the ER, made Mommy get in a wheel chair and ride on upstairs. She got upstairs at 1:10.

Because my Mom had called her midwife earlier, she was already there. The nurse greeted Mom, and told her to go straight back into a labor and delivery room. Mom put on a gown and laid down on the bed. Daddy walked in the room at that point. The nurse started taking Mommy's blood pressure, when all of a sudden, my bag of waters broke.

Then, I started just pushing my way out, and fast. My Mommy started feeling pressure. The nurse decided to check Mommy's cervix, but instead, she felt my head, almost out. The nurse called out to another nurse to get barb, our midwife in there. My midwife came in, sat on the edge of the bed, and guided me out.

I was born at 1:19, 9 minutes after getting to labor and delivery. Maybe Daddy was right to have driven so crazy to get to the hospital. It was unbelievable to Mommy that I was born that quickly. Mommy's hair was even still wet from her shower that morning. What a day!! Whew!!
