Samantha Evelyn Kappes
Daughter of Kolby and Danielle
Born Dec 09, 1998

This page contains the cute things Sammi has said and done.

18 months
One evening when Sammi was about 18 months old, I(Mommy) was talking to my Mom on the phone. Sammi was running about doing cute stuff. All of a sudden, she went to a cabinet, and got out a container full of macaroni noodles. I was relating this story as it happened to my Mom, and each new addition became funnier and funnier. She proceeded to dump out the macaroni noodles into a pile on the floor. I told her to clean them up. She went and got a bowl, which I thought she was going to put the noodles in, however, she had different plans. She took off her diaper and sat in the bowl and PEED. I couldn't believe it.

A friend from our ward needed me to babysit her two year old daughter for two weeks, 'cause her regular sitter was on vacation. Little Stasia was potty-trained. Sammi was very fascinated by the whole "going potty" thing. Stasia would bring her potty chair with her. Sammi would\ want to sit on the potty too. She loved it so much, that we bought her a potty too.

Sammi loved her potty. She would sit and sit and sit on it. It was becoming very boring for Mommy, because Sammi would go sit on the potty for a good half hour, and want Mommy in there talking to her the whole time but not do anything in it. This went on for about a month. Finally, one day Sammi "accidentally" peed into the potty. Sammi was so surprised. I exclaimed "You did it. You did it." She was so excited and finally figured out what the purpose was for the potty. For the next 3 months, she used the potty almost every time she needed to pee (except at night). I really thought she was going to be potty-trained before she was two years old for sure. But one day she stopped using the potty.

She's now 26 months old and once again is starting to use the potty again.

19 months
Uncle Kenley, Uncle Kody and Daddy worked HOURS putting together Sammi's new swing set. Sammi absolutely loved it. When she wanted to go outside and play, she said "go wee, go wee".

18 months
Sammi joined the nursery at church. It was a miserable time for Mommy from about 12 months to 18 months, because little ones can't join the nursery until they are 18 months. Sammi would try to run into the nursery every time she saw the door open for the entire 6 months before she was old enough. She couldn't wait. She loved seeing "the babies", even though all the kids were older than her. Finally, one day she went into the nursery, and she never looked back. Now at 2 yrs, whenever she talks about church she says, "I be quiet, and then I go to NURSERY!!"

19 months
When she was 19 months old, we counted up over 100 words that she could say. We were amazed at the words, and it wasn't even an all-inclusive list. We're sure she used many more words than that.

21 months
By 21 months, she could identify most of her letters (uppercase), and she would say what each letter was for, "S for Sammi", "D for Daddy", etc. What a smart little girl!!!

Throughout my pregnancy with Hannah, Sammi and I would regularly watch "A Baby Story" on TLC. Each episode follows a different couple as they prepare for the birth of a child, and throughout delivery, and a little scene post partum. So Sammi had watched more than her fair share of births. One day she laid down on the floor and said, "A baby's in my belly." Then she said, "I pushing." Then she grabbed a baby doll and said, "The baby came out. The baby came out." At that point, I think I knew she really understood that we were really having a baby.

21 months
We were playing around with different names for baby Hannah. We weren't certain on a pick. But, we kind of liked the name, Hannah. Mommy decided to "try" the name by calling the baby, "Baby Hannah". Well, Sammi picked up on it, and from then on, the baby WAS "Baby Hannah". We'd ask her about other names, and she'd say "NO. Just Baby Hannah."

21 months
Sammi is going through a terrible "WRITING ALL OVER EVERYTHING" phase. We aren't able to stop her. She climbs until she finds pens, markers, crayons, etc and just scribbles all over walls, furniture, papers, etc. She would always get in trouble, but do it anyway. By about two years old, she was pretty much over this phase. Thank goodness!!!

21 monthsBy about 21 months old, she was really into pretend play. She had pretend food, and pretend friends, and pretend monsters, etc. This was definitely the start of a new fun phase. Mommy and Daddy love the pretend play.

22 months
One day she was looking at a picture of Jesus on a table. Then, she had this sad look on her face and said, "Jesus is sad." The picture is a very serious looking picture, and she looked like she felt bad for him. It was so sweet, yet sad that she thought Jesus was sad.

24 months

  • She's really learning a lot about Jesus. She is constantly talking about Jesus, how much He loves Sammi, and loves Mommy, etc. It's so sweet. And then sometimes, He'll become one of her imaginary friends. She'll pick up imaginary Jesus, and hug him. Then she'll carry him to the couch. Then she'll put him on the floor, and in her high chair. It's very funny, and so sweet.
  • At about 2 years old, she suddenly learned to sing. It's so sweet. She can sing entire songs, including, "Jesus Loves Me", "I am a Child of God", "Rock-a-bye Baby".
  • Sammi became a big sister. She was a wonderful sister from the beginning, and never really showed much in the way of jealousy.
25 months
At about 25 months old, Sammi adopted a pet doggy in the form of her warm winter hat. It's one of those yarn hats with strings to tie under her chin. She was dragging it around the house one morning, when she suddenly decided it was her pet doggy name Bone. She loves taking Bone for walks. Well, eventually, she would want to play with Bone, but her hat wouldn't be near, so Bone started taking the form of other objects. At this point, Bone is now purely imaginary and invisible. She just pretends that he's there with no representative object. She also has an imaginary cat named Claire. She still regularly plays with Bone and Claire now at 27 months. It's VERY CUTE!!!

26 months
  • At 26 months old, she started wanted to take walks. This is the cutest thing. She wants to hold (usually her Daddy's) hands and walk around the house. She'll want to walk to the kitchen, and then to Mommy's room, and then to Sammi's room, and just all over the house. It's so sweet, because she and her Daddy are just walking around the house holding hands, in the sweetest way.
  • At about 26 months old, one day she was carrying a sippy cup with milk. She started making circles going into the kitchen, through the kitchen, into the living room, through the living room, and into the kitchen again. Then, she started saying "I love milk SO MUCH!!!" in a very sing-song way. She kept saying this OVER AND OVER again. Then, she asked for chockey-milk (which she didn't get), and started saying. "I love chockey-milk SO MUCH!!!" (with real emphasis on the "SO MUCH!". She did the constantly for about 20 minutes. Since then, she thinks it's the funniest thing in the world. She's now 28 months, and she still regularly makes her kitchen/living room rounds saying "I love chockey-milk SO MUCH!!!" for no apparent reason, other than it's fun. Today she added another phrase of: "It smells so great!" Silly girl!!
27 months
  • At about 27 months old, she started holding Hannah's hand. It's the sweetest thing in the world. She'll just sit beside Hannah, and hold her hand, and give her kisses. You can just see how much love she has for her little sister.
  • At about 27 months old, Sammi has decided she's old enough to dress herself. She gets very mad when I pick out her clothes or try to help her. She does it all by herself. It makes quite a site sometimes. It's very funny the things she'll put on. She also always argues with me trying to convince me to let her wear her "heart shoes". (Her heart shoes are the plastic, toy dress up shoes that little girls have.) She thinks they are real shoes, and they are pretty, and she ought to be able to wear them anywhere she wants.
  • She can spell "Sami".
28 months
  • The other day she told me that I wasn't allowed to hold Hannah. She said, "No, Mommy. Hannah's my baby, not yours. You can't hold her." And Sammi wanted to just sit and hold her so sweet. Sammi is a GREAT sister.
  • She's suddenly really good at doing a little front roll/flip. She's been doing them for a long time, but all of a sudden, they are really good and really straight.
  • She has a favorite activity---playing the Candy Game. (Candy Land) She and her Daddy play it almost every night. She's starting to be able to play the real rules, but it's much more fun to play their adapted version, which varies all the time. Sometimes, they'll just ask each other to hand them certain color cards. Other times, they'll put all of one color card together. Other times they'll just move the little men around the board randomly for fun. But they love it. It's become the Sammi and Daddy routine.
  • On April 23, we were talking about the zoo. Upon asking her what animals were at the zoo, she started in on "giraffes, and zebras, and elephants, and monkeys,". She then added, "and dinosaurs". I told her there aren't any dinosaurs at the zoo. She was kind of argumentative insisting that there were dinosaurs at the zoo. Finally I told her that the dinosaurs were ALL GONE. She then replied that "we need to go the store and buy some. We'll take the dinosaurs to the zoo. Dinosaurs need the zoo too."
  • She has started playing grocery store. It's very fun, but she's a child of the 21st century. Instead of pretending to use cash, she swipes a card. (Hopefully, she's not going to be ruined into thinking unlimited money.)
  • She LOVES to color. She colors all the time.
  • She can kind of spell "Kappes"---"K-A-P-P-S".
  • She changes Hannah's diaper. She will take the old one off, and she'll put a new one on. She needs a little assistance getting it centered though.
  • First Stitches. On April 10, 2001, Sammi climbed up onto the couch and fell behind our treadmill where we believe she hit her head on a hexagonal weight. She busted her little head. She received 3 stitches. She did quite well with them. At Children's Hospital they didn't even give her a shot to numb the area, instead they numbed it with an ointment. She was very excited about having 3 string band-aids.
